Twin Life

“Well… There’s a Surprise” Our First Ultrasound Appointment

The ultrasound tech tries to gauge our response before going on. We are just looking at her dumbfounded. Not a clue what she’s talking about. She continues by saying, “This is baby A.” And with that, it clicks. Mark and I start laughing nervously and ask her, “Is it, twins?”

“Holy Shit, two babies” was about all the two of us could get out while in the ultrasound room. We were laughing and crying and holding each other as this little adventure got real, real fast. Mark started talking about minivans and life insurance, and all I could think about was how big my belly was about to get. At the moment, it was blissful as we started to let the fact that we were going from 0 kids to two babies settle. We left the doctor’s office and got in our car. We started talking logistics.

We were living with Mark’s parents at the time as we were finishing up some small renovations to the house we had just purchased. That house, by the way, was a 900 sqft 2 bedroom 2 bath. We bought the house weeks before we found out we were pregnant and a couple of months before we were told we were having twins. This house was supposed to be the “fun house” near downtown. Life has a funny way of altering your plans.

Anyways, we started talking about what we were going to tell Mark’s parents. We hadn’t even told my parents that we were pregnant yet. We knew we were going up to Daphne soon and wanted to do it in person. We both immediately decided we want to wait and tell Mark’s family that it was twins in person. We were all scheduled to be together for Thanksgiving. We also knew we could hide that we had a surprise to tell them with a gender reveal. We had our plan—only one problem. I’m absolutely the worst liar in the world.
